The boat was called Cat Marine, named after the shipyard where it was built. The main hull had been designed for a catamaran. Alain Veyron built this boat to compete in the 1980 Transat Anglaise solo race, which saw Moxie win the overall class. After a few days of racing, following a failure of the autopilot, the skipper decided to turn back. The boat was very unstable downwind, which led Alain Veyron to resume the race, sailing close-hauled with the helm locked. Despite this, he finished first in his multihull category! With its great beam, the Stripling 28 was a visionary boat for its time, foreshadowing today’s modern multihulls. It is the ‘little brother of VSD’, built in the same year by the same architect.
